Our Daily World, In Photos

Emily Keener, “The Whole Wide World”

As photographers, we all know the power photographs posses in their ability to capture a point of view at any particular instant and their tremendous ability to captivate audiences.

While a typical day might see us getting our news through sources like blogs and websites, the daily paper, news radio, and the ubiquitous ’round the clock cable news, as photographers, we respond best to seeing the world through photos.

Thanks to the internet and the countless excellent web-based news sources, there are some great daily photo sites dedicated to showing a whole worldview with just a few clicks of the mouse.

If you’re in the need of some daily inspiration, or just want to find out some great places to get a rundown of current events told through photographs, here are a few of our favorites:

  • Lens – Fantastic daily round-ups from the New York Times, as well as poignant photo essays from past and present.
  • Flak Photo – Daily photos from emerging photographers from around the world. Editor, Andy Adams also has some great dialogue going surrounding the current photography climate across Flak’s social media.
  • Time Lightbox – Relevant and timely photo essays published at several points throughout day.
  • Slate’s Today’s Photos – Each day is a different thematic string of photos from the Magnum archive. Everything from Martin Parr’s take on “boring” to photos that embody a particular holiday.
  • LIFE – This partnership between Getty Images and LIFE Magazine brings the best of both worlds: “Today’s Top Photos” and millions of spectacular photographs from the archives of the two behemoths.
  • The Picture Show – NPR’s special interest page for photo stories across a gamut of subject matter.
  • BBC News In Pictures – For 24-hour round-ups of world news as well as highlights of particular interest
